Discus Launch Gliders

Experiences over the last few years with Hand Launch Gliders has resulted in some very rewarding flights but at the expense of the ranging ability of the models and resulting long term arm problems which effectively stopped me from enjoying this type of flying.

Web site information and discussion groups bought us into contact with the new trend of DLG--Discus Launch  and SAL--Side Arm Launching, both of these have led to the specialization of models resulting in extreme launch heights (with great ease) and models with a very broad speed range and penetration.

Essentially launch is achieved either by grasping the Tip of the wing  and rotating a full turn releasing at a much higher speed than would be possible with over arm launches or by holding with two fingers  a peg fitted vertically into the wing tip again releasing at one turn.

Our first flights immediately showed us how simple and high these launches can be.

Unfortunately these launch techniques place very high stresses on the model and ask it to change from a rotary flight path to a straight one in about 1 second, both calling for  a different approach to models and construction techniques.
